Non - PBDE Flame Retardants in the Environment and in People
نویسنده
چکیده
We are all aware of the ubiquity of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants in the environment and in people; indeed, there have been several reviews on the subject (among others, see Hites, 2004; Hale et al., 2006; Law et al., 2006). In addition to PBDEs, there is a developing body of knowledge on the environmental presence of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) (see Covaci et al., 2006) and of tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and its dimethylated derivative. In addition to these more wellknown flame retardants, other flame retardants, some highly chlorinated, are now beginning to be identified in the environment. The following paragraphs summarize some information about these compounds. Their structures and abbreviations are given in Figure 1.

Classic and novel brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in common sole (Solea solea L.) from main nursery zones along the French coasts.
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) were investigated in juvenile common sole from nursery zones situated along the French coast in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Extensive identification was performed with regard to PBDEs, novel BFRs 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE) and decabromodiphenylethane (DBDPE), and other non-PBDE BFRs, namely, hexabromobenzene (HBB) and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobipheny...
متن کاملSpatial and temporal trends of alternative flame retardants and polybrominated diphenyl ethers in ringed seals (Phoca hispida) across the Canadian Arctic.
Concentrations of alternative flame retardants and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were analyzed in ringed seal (Phoca hispida) blubber collected across the Canadian Arctic during subsistence hunts between 1998 and 2013. More than 80% of sampled animals were females and juvenile males. The highest mean ΣPBDE concentrations (sum of 13 congeners) were found in seals from Nain (Nunatsiavut)...

Restrictions on the use of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have resulted in the use of alternative flame retardants in consumer products to comply with flammability standards. In contrast to PBDEs, information on the occurrence and fate of these alternative compounds in the environment is limited, particularly in the United States. In this study, a survey of flame retardants in San Franc...
متن کاملBrominated flame retardants: a novel class of developmental neurotoxicants in our environment?
Brominated flame retardants are a novel group of global environmental contaminants. Within this group the polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) constitute one class of many that are found in electrical appliances, building materials, and textiles. PBDEs are persistent compounds that appear to have an environmental dispersion similar to that of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dichlorodiphen...
متن کاملThe flame retardants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, are pregnane X receptor activators.
Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are used as flame retardants and are universally present in the environment. An exponential increase in PBDE concentrations in the U.S. population have been reported over the last 3 decades. PBDEs 47 (tetraBDE) and 99 (pentaBDE) are the most commonly detected PBDE congeners in the environment and in human samples. PBDE209 (decaBDE) is the only remaining PB...
